International Jazz Day has been celebrated in various Indonesien cities in the past years. Jakarta also celebrated International Jazz Day this year by inviting local and international musicians to play at Jakarta’s town hall. In the past years, the International Jazz Day was always celebrated by organising concerts at Ican Studio, a jazz studio in Jakarta. This time, the studio worked together with the Jakarta local government to celebrate the festival and also bringing traditional Batavian elements to the stages. For 2 days long jazz musicians played on 3 stages, one of which was dedicated only for traditional Batavian music. Indonesian jazz musicians, such as Barry Likumahuwa, Robert MR, David Manuhutu, and Agung Munthe, played their music on the two other stages, which were never absent of listeners.

On day one, jazz-lovers were indulged by various jazz genres, such fusion, groove, swing dan Brazillian Jazz. One of the highlights of this day was Agung Munthe who entertained the audience with his modern jazz music. His act also featured Rega Dauna who showed his skill on the harmonica. Agung Munthe played songs from his new album “Lucid” and also songs from Bill Lawrence and Snarky Puppy. His act was also by his band which featured Yosua Giang on guitar with his overdrive guitar sound.

Other artists also had their success on day one. Dua Empat (lit. “two four”) successfully entertained the listeners with their interesting band concept that features two young fresh jazz guitarists playing their original songs. The audience followed the swing rhythm by clapping and singing along with the group. Besides their own songs, they also invited a singer, Asteriska, to play together and to sing her original songs.

Robert MR Electric, who is one of the artists for the first day, performed his music with Mattew Sayersz. They played their modern jazz music and original works with elements of bebop and fusion jazz. Even though their songs were new to the audience, they were very well accepted by the audience who later sang together in the last song with the artists.

Between the jazz music being played, old Batavian songs from the legendary singer Benjamin Sueb, who was active in the 1950s up until the 1990s, were also to be heard at the festival. His music was played by musicians with traditional instruments and costumes and was a special highlight of the event.

The second and the last day was specially hosted by the Vice Governor of Jakarta, Sandiaga Uno. We hope this will be a good start for the music scene in Jakarta to grow and to be fully supported by the local government, both for modern music as well as for traditional music.
